Alchemy is the art of taking matter and forming it into something else. Brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric are naturals for this art. One of the principal concepts of Alchemy is the Law of Equivalent Exchange. This law simply states that in order to gain something, you have to give up something of equal value. But with this law come two taboos of alchemy: turning objects into gold, and human transmutation. State Alchemists perform alchemy at the government's bidding by using special devices that allow them to harness the power of alchemy, even if it means destroying lives, something Edward will avoid at all costs. But Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist, is able to perform the craft without the use of an array, something that makes him special.
